8 killed in central India train collision

Rescue, relief operation underway in Chhattisgarh state

ANKARA(AA)- At least eight people were killed and several injured when a passenger train collided with a freight train in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh, officials said Tuesday.

Sanjay Agrawal, a senior official of the state’s Bilaspur district, said more than 15 people were injured and have been transported to hospitals.

Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai wrote on US social media company X that the “state government is closely monitoring the situation with complete readiness and sensitivity.” He added that “all necessary resources and medical assistance are being ensured for the treatment of the injured.”

All India Radio said that “relief and rescue operations are being carried out on a war footing.”
