ANKARA (AA) – Algeria expressed deep concern on Sunday over “dangerous escalation” in the Middle East region following US strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities, warning that the attacks risk worsening regional instability.
In a statement, the Algerian Foreign Ministry said the Israeli assault on Iran has taken “a dangerous new turn” with the American strikes, adding that the attacks “intensify the escalation and exacerbate the situation” in the region.
Algeria noted the “irony” that the US strikes came at a time of growing international consensus on the need to de-escalate and return to negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program.
“This international consensus has continuously stressed the need for a ceasefire and for genuine efforts toward a peaceful resolution,” the ministry said.
It cautioned that the region now faces “unprecedented and unpredictable consequences” and urged all actors to reflect on the lessons of regional history, which, it said, show that military solutions “have never resolved any of the issues at hand.”
Algeria reiterated that the only viable path forward is a “peaceful political approach grounded in international legitimacy and the UN Charter.”
US President Donald Trump said early Sunday that his forces bombed three Iranian nuclear sites in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan.
The attacks came as the latest escalation in a US-backed Israeli military assault on Iran since June 13, prompting Tehran to launch retaliatory attacks on Israel.
Israeli authorities said at least 25 people have been killed and hundreds injured since then in Iranian missile attacks.
Meanwhile, in Iran, 430 people have been killed and more than 3,500 wounded in the Israeli assault, according to the Iranian Health Ministry.
