BEIJING (AA) - At least one person was killed and 20 others buried Friday morning by a landslide following days of heavy rainfall in southwest China.

State news agency Xinhua reported that rescue teams recovered nine people -- one of them a fatality -- from the rubble in Pianpo village in Guizhou province.

The eight survivors were rushed to hospital and rescue efforts continue in the area, which the local government has instructed residents to evacuate.

Heavy rains have been sweeping across southern China for over a week, resulting in floods in Guizhou and neighboring provinces.

On Wednesday, at least five people were killed and two others left missing after a coal mine flooded in Guizhou during a safety inspection.
