OVIEDO, Spain (AA) – At least two people are dead after a strong explosion on Wednesday destroyed a large residential building in central Madrid.

Although the cause is unconfirmed, Jose Luis Rodriguez Almeida, the capital’s mayor, told media it was likely due to a gas leak.

Emergency services are still attending to an unknown number of injuries.

According to Rodriguez Almeida, the building continues to burn from the inside as firefighters try to bring the blaze under control.

The sudden strong explosion blew the facade off the top six floors of the building.
