South Korean authorities on Wednesday said that seven people lost their lives, presumably from heatstroke, and over 1,000 people with heat-related illnesses were admitted to hospitals across the country this summer, according to Yonhap News Agency.
The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) has identified 1,228 such patients as of Tuesday, since the KDCA began tracking the number of heat-related patients on May 15.
On Tuesday, some 238 people were admitted to hospitals in capital Seoul as the temperature in the capital city hit 37.7°C (99.9°F), the highest early July temperature in 117 years of records since 1908, beating the previous record of 36.8°C (98.2°F) from 1939.
According to KDCA, some 238 people lost their lives due to heat-related illnesses between 2011 and 2024.
On Tuesday, the city of Paju also reached 40.1°C (104.2°F), and the city of Gwangmyeong hit 40.2°C (104.4°F), based on automated weather station data.
