BEIJING (AA) – Nine people have been confirmed dead after an avalanche tore down a mountainside in China’s southwestern autonomous region of Tibet burying animals and villagers in its wake.
China Daily confirmed the deaths of the residents of Dungru village in Rutog county, Ngari prefecture, on Monday, adding that more than 350 sheep and 110 yaks were also entombed.
The avalanche -- which occurred early Sunday high in the region -- is reported to have raised the level of snow in the area by 8 meters (26 feet).
The report said that cracks have been appearing on local glaciers, leading to fears of another avalanche.
