MANAMA, Bahrain (AA) - Bahrain’s Interior Ministry said Thursday that it had foiled an attempt by several escaped terrorism suspects to flee to nearby Iran.

"In a joint operation, security forces at dawn Thursday preempted the escape [from Bahrain] of fugitives involved in a Jan. 1 jailbreak," the ministry tweeted.

According to preliminary investigations conducted by the ministry, the suspects were picked up while on a boat in the Persian Gulf heading to Iran.

In early January, gunmen attacked Bahrain’s Jau Prison near Manama, allowing at least 10 prisoners charged with terrorism to escape.
