Ban visits Turkey's UN mission post Istanbul attack

UN 'stands firmly with people and government of Turkey in fighting against terrorism and extremism,' UN chief says

NEW YORK (AA) - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon paid a visit to Turkey's permanent mission to the global body in New York Thursday in the wake of a terrorist attack in Istanbul that killed scores of people.

"I offer, on the behalf of the United Nations, my deepest condolences to many victims who have been killed by these heinous terrorist attacks and also wish speedy recovery of many injured people," Ban said.

"Nothing can justify such kind of heinous terrorist attacks. They must be defeated in the name of humanity."

Tuesday's attack on Ataturk International Airport killed 44 people and injured more than 200 after three suicide bombers blew themselves up at the entrance and international departure terminals.

An ongoing investigation resulted in the arrest of 13 people, and officials revealed that the bombers were all non-Turkish citizens.
