ISTANBUL (AA) - China on Thursday slammed the US over its statement on the Chinese-built Chancay Port in Peru, calling it a “blatant spreading of rumors.”
Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said Beijing firmly opposes and expresses strong dissatisfaction with the US for “blatant spreading of rumors and smearing of Chancay Port,” according to state-run Global Times.
The remarks came after the US State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs expressed concern, claiming that Peru might be powerless to oversee Chancay, one of its largest ports, which the bureau said is under the control of predatory Chinese owners.
"We support Peru’s sovereign right to oversee critical infrastructure in its own territory. Let this be a cautionary tale for the region and the world: cheap Chinese money costs sovereignty," said the State Department's Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs on US social media company X on Wednesday.
The mega port in the city of Chancay is a $1.3 billion complex that was inaugurated by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2024 during his visit to the Latin American nation.
