Biden says he hopes to hold summit with Putin this summer in Europe

US president says it is his 'hope and expectation' to meet Russian president

WASHINGTON (AA) - US President Joe Biden said on Tuesday it is his "hope and expectation" to hold a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin this summer when he travels to Europe.

Biden first proposed the idea of a summit in Europe during a telephone call with Putin in April as tensions flared amid Moscow's troop buildup along the Ukrainian border.

Speculation has since mounted that the meeting could take place in June when Biden will visit Europe for a G7 meeting in the UK and a NATO summit in Brussels.

But the White House has yet to commit about whether the potential meeting could be tagged on to the end of that trip, currently scheduled for June 11-14.

Russian and American national security advisors discussed the possibility of the summit a week after the presidents spoke last month. Details on any additional momentum have been scant but Biden said "we're working on" adding the Putin meeting to that trip.
