WASHINGTON (AA) - US President Joe Biden will visit New Orleans next week, the White House said Friday after a truck-ramming attack authorities say was inspired by the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group killed at least 14 people and left dozens more injured.
The president and first lady Jill Biden will visit the city Monday to "grieve with the families and community members impacted by the tragic attack on January 1 and meet with officials on the ground," the White House said in a statement.
The early New Year's morning attack happened in the heart of the French Quarter at around 3:15 a.m. when the streets were filled with partygoes.
The FBI identified the suspect accused of carrying out the attack as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a 42-year-old US citizen and Army veteran from Texas.
According to the FBI, Jabbar drove from Houston to New Orleans on Tuesday evening and posted several videos online expressing his support for Daesh/ISIS shortly before the deadly attack.
In the aftermath, Biden pledged to aggressively pursue terrorist groups wherever they are.
"We're going to continue to relentlessly pursue ISIS and other terrorist organizations where they are, and they'll find no safe harbor here," he said Thursday.
