BAGHDAD (AA) – A car bomb attack targeted Tahrir Square in Baghdad amid anti-government protests ongoing since October, according to security sources on Friday.

Casualties are feared from the explosion which rocked a wide area, said the sources who asked not to be named due to security concerns.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.

Iraq is witnessing mass protests which started against poor living conditions and rampant corruption, but spiralled into demands for dissolving Adel Abdul-Mahdi's government.

According to the Iraq's High Commission for Human Rights, at least 325 Iraqis have been killed and around 15,000 have been injured since the protests began on Oct. 1.
