BELGRADE, Serbia (AA) - Hundreds gathered in the Bosnian capital Sarajevo to protest against U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as "Israel's capital".

The demonstrators carried posters with "Stop Trump", "Take your hands off Jerusalem" and "Jerusalem is the capital of Palestine" written on them.

Majed Maarouf, president of the Palestinian Union in Bosnia and Herzegovina and former Palestinian ambassador, said: "The Jerusalem of Europe, Sarajevo, sends a message that Palestinians are not alone."

"Jerusalem is a city that opens its doors to all religions," he said, calling on the EU to recognize East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital.

On Dec. 6, Trump announced his decision to recognize Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, sparking angry demonstrations in many Muslim countries and worldwide condemnation.

Rebuffing the move, an extraordinary Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) summit in Istanbul this week declared East Jerusalem to be Palestine’s capital.

Jerusalem remains at the heart of the Israel-Palestine conflict, with Palestinians hoping that East Jerusalem -- now occupied by Israel -- might eventually serve as the capital of a Palestinian state.
