ATHENS (AA) - Bulgaria’s prosecutor general was targeted for assassination when a bomb exploded on a motorway as his motorcade drove past, local media reported Monday.
Speaking to the state-run BTA news agency, the head of the National Investigation Service, Borislav Sarafov, said the incident was not a case of intimidation but an assassination attempt on Ivan Geshev.
He said it took place before noon on Monday as Geshev was on his way to the capital, Sofia.
“A huge explosion took place on a sharp turn of the road which had to be approached at a slower speed,” he said.
The explosion left a crater 30-40 centimeters (12-16 inches) deep with a diameter of nearly 3 meters (10 feet), he said.
Criminal proceedings were instituted for an act of terrorism, Sarafov noted, adding the case is being treated extremely seriously.
He declined, however, to disclose whether there were suspects.
