Clashes erupt between forces affiliated with government, Presidency Council

TRIPOLI, Libya (AA) - Calm prevailed in the Libyan capital Tripoli, on Monday after overnight clashes between rival militias.

In a statement, the Tripoli Security Directorate said all roads in central Tripoli were reopened following the clashes.

It, however, did not provide any details about the damage.

The government-run Ambulance and Emergency Service said one person was injured in the clashes that erupted late Sunday between forces affiliated with the government and the Presidency Council.

There was no comment yet from the government or the council on the clashes.

Residents of southern Tripoli have staged protests in recent days against military buildups in residential neighborhoods amid accusations for militias of carrying out criminal activities.

Oil-rich Libya has remained in turmoil since 2011 when longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi was ousted after four decades in power.
