WASHINGTON (AA) - A small plane crashed in a mountainous area in the US state of Virginia on Sunday, said the Federal Aviation Administration.

"A Cessna Citation crashed into mountainous terrain in a sparsely populated area of southwest Virginia around 3 p.m. local time on June 4," said the agency in a release.

The aircraft took off from Elizabethton Municipal Airport in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and was bound for Long Island MacArthur Airport in New York.

The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate the incident, the statement said.
