ANKARA (AA)— A Chinese man has been executed for fatally stabbing a 10-year-old Japanese boy last September, local Japanese media reported Tuesday.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry informed the Japanese Embassy in Beijing on Monday that the man had been executed, according to Japan Today.

In January, a Chinese court sentenced 45-year-old Zhong Changchun to death for attacking the boy while he was walking to school in southern China’s Guangdong province in September.

The boy succumbed to his injuries the following day.

The attack reportedly occurred on the anniversary of the 1931 Japanese bombing of a railroad track near Shenyang in Liaoning province—an incident that led to the Japanese invasion of Manchuria.

Last week, China also executed a man convicted of a knife attack in which he fatally stabbed a bus attendant and wounded a Japanese mother and her child near Shanghai in June.

China has seen a string of violent knife attacks in recent years, many resulting in multiple deaths and death sentences for the perpetrators.

In one such case last November, eight people were killed and 17 others injured in a knife attack at a vocational school in Jiangsu province.
