ISTANBUL (AA) – China said on Tuesday that it seeks a stable Bangladesh and is pursuing a “good neighborliness” policy with the South Asian nation.

“China pursues a policy of good neighborliness and friendship toward all Bangladeshi people. We sincerely hope Bangladesh will realize solidarity, stability, and development,” Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said at a news conference in Beijing.

Her remarks came after a Bangladeshi court on Monday sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death in absentia over crimes against humanity committed during last year’s uprising against her government.

“This is the domestic affair of Bangladesh,” Mao said when asked about the death sentence for Hasina, who currently resides in India.

Over 1,400 people were killed during the crackdown on the student-led uprising that brought the Awami League party's 15-year rule to an end.
