China’s top political ideologue Wang Huning on Saturday emphasized the importance of “adhering to the policies of peaceful reunification” with Taiwan.

Wang spoke at an event in Beijing marking the 80th anniversary of Taiwan’s restoration to China, state media reported.

He serves as chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference.

Wang described China’s victory in the war and the restoration of Taiwan as “great triumphs for the entire Chinese nation,” state-run CGTN reported.

He called for unity among Chinese people at home and abroad to defend national sovereignty and to “advance the goal of national rejuvenation.”

"The establishment of the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration demonstrates the firm resolve of all ethnic groups in China to uphold the one-China principle and defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity," Wang said.

The event was also attended by senior Chinese officials.

Wang stressed the need to adhere to the policies of peaceful reunification and the “one country, two systems” framework, asserting that there is only one China in the world and that Taiwan is an" inalienable" part of the country.

On Friday, China's national legislature officially designated Oct. 25 as the Commemoration Day of Taiwan's Restoration.
