Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu met with newly appointed US ambassador to China David Perdue and discussed relations between Beijing and Washington, the Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.
Ma and Perdue had a candid and in-depth exchange of views on bilateral relations and important issues of common concern, said the ministry in a statement.
"China views and handles China-US relations in accordance with the three principles of mutual respect, peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation proposed by President Xi Jinping, and firmly safeguards its sovereignty, security and development interests," Ma said.
He hoped that the US would work with China to jointly promote the stable, healthy and sustainable development of relations between the two countries.
Ma's remarks came after China and the US announced last week that they had agreed to a sweeping rollback of punitive tariffs for an initial 90-day period.
The news came after US President Donald Trump raised tariffs on Chinese imports to 145%, prompting Beijing to retaliate with 125% duties on American goods.
