NINEVEH, Iraq (AA) – At least 14 Daesh militants were killed in U.S.-led coalition airstrikes on Sunday in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, an Iraqi police officer said.

Coalition planes struck several Daesh positions in eastern and northern Mosul, colonel Ahmed al-Jabouri told Anadolu Agency.

“Fourteen militants were killed in the airstrikes,” he said.

On Sunday, Kurdish peshmerga forces captured four villages southeast of Mosul, which was overran by Daesh terrorist group in 2014.

Iraqi forces are currently preparing to launch a major offensive to retake Mosul, the country’s second largest city, from the militant group.

Backed by U.S.-led airstrikes, Iraqi forces have managed to retake most of the territory seized by Daesh since 2014. The terrorist group, however, still controls several parts in the country.
