ISTANBUL (AA) - Colombia on Monday recalled its ambassador to the US amid rising tensions between the two countries.
"Daniel Garcia-Pena, Colombia's Ambassador to the United States of America, has been recalled for consultations by President Gustavo Petro Urrego," Colombia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement from Bogota, the capital.
The government will announce further decisions "in the coming hours," it added.
The recall came after US President Donald Trump accused Gustavo Petro, his Colombian counterpart, of being "a drug leader" and announced the suspension of all economic aid to the country.
Petro responded Sunday that Trump is being "misled" by his advisors. The Colombian leader said he was the one who uncovered alleged links between drug trafficking and political power in Colombia.
The dispute marks the latest in a series of clashes since Trump returned to the White House for a second term in January.
Previous escalations include the US decision to remove Colombia from the list of countries fighting drugs and the revocation of Petro's visa last month following statements he made to the UN General Assembly in New York.
