Coronavirus fatalities, infections mount in Latin America

Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay report new COVID-19 cases, deaths, recoveries

BOGOTA, Colombia (AA) - Countries across Latin America reported new cases of COVID-19 infections, as well as fatalities, according to official data.


- Brazil

At least 943 people in Brazil lost their lives in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of deaths by coronavirus to 636,017, the country’s Health Ministry data showed on Thursday.

During the same period, 164,066 more people tested positive, taking the total number of cases to 27.11 million.

Over 23.44 million recoveries have been reported so far.


- Mexico

Mexico’s COVID-19 case tally surged by 34,261, while fatalities increased by 927 in the last 24 hours, according to the Health Ministry.

Over 5.22 million cases, 311,554 fatalities, and some 4.43 million recoveries have been recorded in the country of 126 million people.


- Colombia

Colombia’s Health Ministry reported 179 more virus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing the nationwide death toll to 136,583.

The total number of cases in the country of nearly 50 million people surpassed 6.25 million, with 8,269 new infections, while the number of recoveries rose to over 5.8 million.


- Argentina

With 25,110 new infections, Argentina’s caseload increased to over 8.7 million, according to Health Ministry data.

The nationwide death toll has risen to 123,707 after 264 patients died in the past day.

More than 8.32 million recoveries have so far been reported in the country of 45 million people.


- Chile

Over the past day, Chile reported 162 deaths related to COVID-19, pushing the death toll to 40,273, according to the country’s Health Ministry.

The number of infections increased by 36,635 as well, bringing the total caseload to more than 2.5 million. So far, more than 2.33 million people have recovered.


- Paraguay

According to the Health Ministry of Paraguay, 50 more patients died from the pandemic in the past 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 17,801.

The country reported 2,904 new cases, taking the total number of infections to 618,815, while 555,799 people have so far recovered from the virus.
