ISTANBUL (AA) - The Czech Republic will be putting an end to hard coal mining after 250 years, Czech Radio reported on Friday.

Operations at the country’s last deep coal mine -- the CSM mine in the Karvina region -- will conclude in late January, with the final load of coal scheduled to be brought to the surface on Saturday.

The technical liquidation of the CSM mine is expected to take about three years. The operating company is rolling out a new business plan extending through 2050, which includes projects such as mine gas capture.

Brown coal mining in the country is expected to end by 2030.
