ISTANBUL (AA) - Czechia and the UK signed a memorandum on nuclear energy, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala announced following a meeting with his British counterpart Keir Starmer on Monday.

"We took a concrete step with Prime Minister Starmer today – we signed a memorandum for closer cooperation in nuclear energy. This will help ensure energy security and affordable energy for future generations," Fiala wrote on X.

He signaled intensive collaboration on the development of small modular reactors, in which Czech company CEZ and the British company Rolls-Royce SMR will also be involved.

"Relations between the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom are excellent. The United Kingdom is our key partner," Fiala noted.

He stated that they further discussed strengthening bilateral trade along with the situation in Ukraine.

"Both our countries have stood firmly on the side of Ukraine since the beginning of Russian aggression. We agreed that military aid needs to be further strengthened – also for the sake of the security of all of Europe," he added.

Starmer, on his part, wrote on X that the nuclear power agreement with Czechia will deliver "cleaner energy, better jobs, and greater security."
