Sophia Smith scores double, Lindsey Horan adds 1 goal for US in Group E match in Auckland

ANKARA (AA) – Defending champions US beat Vietnam 3-0 in a Saturday FIFA Women's World Cup match to start the tournament with a win.

US forward Sophia Smith scored a double and her teammate Lindsey Horan added a goal for the Stars and Stripes in a Group E match at Auckland's Eden Park.

Meanwhile, Japan hammered Zambia 5-0 to top Group C.

In a Group D match, England beat Haiti 1-0 as attacking midfielder Georgia Stanway scored a first-half penalty.

Denmark toppled China 1-0 in another Group D match.

The 2023 Women's World Cup, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, will run through Aug. 20.
