ISTANBUL (AA) - Djibouti on Monday expressed “full solidarity” with Kuwait following Iraq’s submission of new maritime coordinates and a map to the UN, calling for any disputes to be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means.
The Horn of Africa country reaffirmed its support for Kuwait’s full sovereignty over its maritime zones and features, emphasizing the importance of respecting international law, according to a Foreign Ministry statement.
The ministry urged that any outstanding maritime disputes be resolved through “constructive dialogue and peaceful means,” in line with existing agreements between Kuwait and Iraq, to help maintain security and stability in the region.
Djibouti joined a growing list of countries, including Qatar, the UAE, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and Oman, in expressing support for Kuwait.
Kuwait’s Foreign Ministry summoned Iraq’s charge d’affaires on Saturday to protest Baghdad’s submission of maritime coordinates and a map to the UN, calling it a violation of its sovereignty.
The ministry said the filing included claims over maritime areas and fixed features, including Fasht Al-Qaid and Fasht Al-Aij, which it stressed are not subject to dispute and fall under Kuwait’s full sovereignty.
