ANKARA (AA) – Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic was granted a medical exemption from having a coronavirus vaccination to take place at Australian Open, he announced on Tuesday.

"I've spent fantastic quality time with my loved ones over the break and today I'm heading down under with an exemption permission," World No.1 said on Instagram.

The 34-year old player, who won the Australian Open for the ninth time including the 2021 title, still refused to reveal whether he is vaccinated.

The 2022 Australian Open will be held between Jan. 17-30 in Melbourne.

Australian Open chief Craig Tiley previously said that all participants including players at the tournament should be vaccinated against coronavirus or receive a medical exemption by an independent panel of experts.
