Egypt, Kuwait call for immediate ceasefire in Gaza amid Israeli airstrikes

Egyptian, Kuwaiti leaders condemn Israeli attacks as ‘flagrant violation of international law and ceasefire agreement’

ANKARA (AA) – The leaders of Egypt and Kuwait called on Tuesday for an immediate ceasefire in the Gaza Strip following deadly Israeli airstrikes on the Palestinian enclave.

In a phone call between Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the two leaders condemned renewed Israeli attacks on Gaza.

They affirmed the necessity for the international community to assume its responsibilities toward pushing for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the Egyptian presidency said in a statement.

The Israeli army pounded the Gaza Strip early Tuesday, killing more than 404 people and injuring hundreds, breaking a ceasefire agreement that took effect on Jan. 19.

Images emerging from Gaza showed that the majority of the victims were civilians, including women and children, whose homes were bombed during the night.

During the contact, the two leaders reviewed regional developments and reaffirmed their shared views regarding the situation in the region.

They condemned the Israeli assault as a “flagrant violation of international law and the ceasefire agreement that was reached” and a “deliberate effort to make the Gaza Strip uninhabitable and force Palestinians from the Strip to emigrate."

The two leaders warned that the Israeli assaults will cause an expansion of the regional conflict, and undermine the prospects for peace and stability in the region."

More than 48,500 Palestinians have been killed, mostly women and children, and over 112,000 others injured in a brutal Israeli military campaign in Gaza since October 2023.

In November, the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Israel also faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
