Egypt, Syria sign memos of understanding on gas supply, petroleum cooperation

Agreements signed during visit by Syrian delegation to Cairo

DAMASCUS/ ISTANBUL (AA) - Egypt and Syria signed two memorandums of understanding on Monday to cooperate on supplying Egyptian gas for electricity generation in Syria and meeting the country’s needs of petroleum products.

The agreements were signed during a visit by a delegation from Syria’s Ministry of Oil to Cairo, headed by Deputy Energy Minister for Oil Affairs Ghiath Diab.

The first memorandum aims to cooperate on supplying gas to Syria via Egypt for electricity generation, while the second focuses on meeting Syria’s needs for petroleum products, according to a statement by Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources and Syria’s state news agency SANA.

The Syrian delegation also met with Egyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi to discuss prospects for cooperation in the oil sector and rehabilitating Syria’s gas and petroleum infrastructure.

The new deals come as part of Syria’s efforts to enhance regional partnerships in the energy sector, contributing to improved energy supplies and supporting development needs.
