ANKARA (AA) - The Embassy of El Salvador in the Turkish capital on Friday hosted a reception to commemorate the country's 201st Independence Day.

"201 years ago our heroes left us a legacy that we are still building with the determination of Salvadorans and the support of friendly countries such as Türkiye," Ambassador Hector Jaime said in a speech at the event in Ankara.

Jaime said despite the geographical distance, El Salvador and Türkiye share many similarities.

"Proof of the above are the actions that our governments have developed this year. First, the state visit of President Nayib Bukele to Türkiye on January. A significant and substantive visit, which resulted in seven agreements signed in different strategic areas," he added.

Attending the reception, Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Faruk Kaymakci said Türkiye and El Salvador will accelerate the bilateral relations.

Kaymakci said the trade volume between the two countries is "limited", but they aim to increase it to $50 million.

Türkiye and El Salvador established diplomatic relations in 1950.
