ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AA) - Ethiopian authorities arrested 82 people described as members of the Daesh (ISIS) terror group, the intelligence agency said Tuesday.
The National Intelligence and Security Service said those arrested were allegedly trained in Somalia’s semi-autonomous state of Puntland and deployed to several areas of Ethiopia.
The arrests were carried out in Addis Ababa and in the Oromia, Amhara, Somali and Harari regions. Major cities noted include Adama, Jimma, Shashemene and Jigjiga.
Authorities said some of those detained were believed to be involved in activities including intelligence gathering, financing and logistics. The agency said communities assisted in the arrests and investigations are continuing.
