EU ambassador to Turkey resigns: EU Delegation sources

Sources are silent on the reason and timing of the resignation of Haber, ambassador since last October

ANKARA (AA) - Hansjorg Haber, the head of the EU Delegation in Ankara, has resigned, stated sources from the EU Delegation to Turkey Tuesday.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking with the media, gave no reason for the resignation.

Nor was any date given for the ambassador’s stepping down.

Haber, a career German diplomat, has headed the EU Delegation in Turkey since last October.

Last month, Haber told journalists that Turkey’s European Union accession bid had been the reverse of the Turkish proverb, "Starting like a Turk, finishing like a German," meaning starting something with enthusiasm and continuing with determination and discipline.

Following the controversial remarks, Haber was summoned to the Turkish Foreign Ministry.
