EU-Arab summit resumes in Egypt

Summit held despite uproar caused by recent mass executions in Egypt

CAIRO (AA) – Participants in the first EU-Arab summit resumed their meetings on Monday with a closed session in Egypt's Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Arab and European officials held a session to discuss ways of dealing with regional challenges, Egypt's official MENA News Agency reported.

Participants discussed Arab-European relations from their political, security and economic aspects as well as latest regional developments as the conflicts in Syria, Yemen, Libya and the Palestinian issue, MENA said.

Talks also dwelt on the issues of counter-terrorism, immigration, refugees and climate change.

The first EU-Arab summit opened in Sharm el-Sheikh on Sunday amid a high turnout from European officials despite the uproar caused by the mass execution of nine youths in connection with the assassination of Egypt's attorney-general in 2015.

The two-day summit, however, sees a low-level representation from half of Arab countries, according to official statements and Arab media outlets.
