BRUSSELS (AA) - The European Court of Auditors, which examines EU revenues and expenses, has said it will review pre-accession assistance provided to Turkey.
A statement from the body said Turkey had been allocated €4.48 billion ($5 billion) between 2007 and 2013.
Almost €2.20 billion had been paid out since 2014, and a further €1.65 billion had been allocated but not yet paid out.
The funds are intended to support Turkey's reforms amid its EU accession process.
This audit will examine whether accounts are well and effectively administered.
The audit result is expected to be released in the first half of 2018, the statement added.
December 1999 saw Turkey become a candidate country for EU membership, however since 2006 only 14 out of 35 chapters in the accession process have been opened.
Ankara has been part of a customs union with the EU since 1995.
