ISTANBUL (AA) - The EU Commission spokesman urged on Wednesday both India and Pakistan to show restraint amid rising tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors.

“We do urge both sides to show restraint and take immediate steps towards the escalation. The EU recalls the need for a negotiated, mutually agreed and lasting, peaceful solution to the conflict,” Anouar El Anouni told a daily press briefing in Brussels.

He said they continue to monitor the recent developments, and condemned the April 22 attack in Pahalgam, Indian-administered Kashmir.

“We reiterate our strong condemnation of the terrorist attack in Pahalgam and the terrible loss of life it cost. We condemn terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, those responsible must be brought to justice,” Anouni added.

India late Tuesday said it launched strikes on cities in Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, targeting nine "terrorist infrastructure" sites.

Pakistan's military spokesman said India hit six locations and at least 26 people were killed and 46 others injured in the strikes, as well as cross-border firing.

The escalation between the nuclear-armed neighbors came in the wake of Pahalgam attack, in which unidentified gunmen killed 26 people.

India had blamed Pakistan for the attack, claiming there were cross-border links. Pakistan denied involvement and called for an independent probe.
