BERLIN (AA)- US President Donald Trump briefed European leaders Monday evening on his phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin about Ukraine, according to a German government spokesman.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s spokesman said Trump and European leaders discussed paths to achieve a ceasefire and peace in Ukraine, and have agreed on next steps.
“They were united in their commitment to closely coordinate the negotiation process and pursue a further technical meeting,” Stefan Kornelius said. “All sides reaffirmed their readiness to closely support Ukraine on its path toward a ceasefire. The European participants announced they would increase pressure on the Russian side through sanctions.”
Participants included Merz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Finland's President Alexander Stubb, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
