BERLIN (AA) - Leaders of the European People’s Party (EPP) convened in Berlin on Friday for the first day of a two-day summit.

The meeting brought together prominent figures, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.

Also in attendance were EPP President Manfred Weber, European Parliament President Roberta Metsola, and Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU). The summit was held at the CDU headquarters, the Konrad Adenauer Haus.

Ahead of the discussions, Weber emphasized the significance of transatlantic relations, expressing the EPP’s desire to collaborate with US President-elect Donald Trump.

The event also marked von der Leyen’s first public engagement since her diagnosis with severe pneumonia earlier this month.

The center-right EPP is the largest and oldest group in the European Parliament.
