European stock markets close Monday higher

Pan-European Stoxx 600 up 0.9%, Germany's DAX gains 1.42%, UK's FTSE earns 0.66%, and France's CAC rises 1.14%

ISTANBUL (AA) - European stock markets ended the first trading day of the week with gains.

The pan-European Stoxx 600 rose 0.9%, or 4.81 points, to close at 540.6.

Germany's DAX 40 index was up 1.42% to end at 23,757.69 points, and the UK's FTSE 100 index climbed 0.66% to 9,128.3.

France's CAC 40 rose 1.14% to close at 7,632.01, while Italy's FTSE MIB 30 index gained 1.89% to 40,697.38 points.

Spain's IBEX 35 index climbed 1.84% to end at 14,386.1 points.

This week, investors are focused on the Bank of England's monetary policy decision on Thursday.

The EU has announced that it will suspend its planned counter-tariffs against the US for six months starting Tuesday.

European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill said Sunday that the EU continues to work with the US to finalize a joint statement, as agreed on July 27.

To facilitate the ongoing negotiations, the commission will take the necessary measures under an emergency procedure to halt the EU countermeasures, which were set to take effect on Aug. 7.
