DUZCE, Türkiye (AA) - The family of a police chief killed during the defeated July 15, 2016 coup attempt in Türkiye proudly remembers their son.
In 2016, Ufuk Baysan was a chief of police in the Special Forces Command in Golbasi, a district in the Turkish capital Ankara.
Saying that the pain over the death of their son remains vivid, Ramazan Baysan, Ufuk’s father, told Anadolu Agency that he very much misses his son.
Despite knowing that his son has long since passed away, Baysan said his eyes still seek out a glimpse of Ufuk when he visits some of his son’s favorite places.
"When he ate at home, he would eat with great gusto and I would say, 'I wish I could eat half of what you do.’ Now, whenever we sit down to the table, this memory comes back to me," he said.
Baysan also denounced the putschists, calling their violent coup attempt the "greatest betrayal of all time."
"Bombing one's own citizens, killing their own soldiers, police, and civilians... I can’t grasp this. I will never forget it until my last breath. This is the biggest betrayal," he said.
Ufuk’s mother Hanife Baysan grew emotional during the interview, saying her pain never subsided and that she suffers still more every July.
"As the month of July approaches, my skin crawls. How could I not, it’s not easy, my son is gone," she said, adding that the pain of losing a child is unlike anything else.
The Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) and its US-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup, which left 251 people dead and 2,734 injured.
Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary.
The attempt by FETO to overthrow the government began around 10 p.m. local time (1900GMT) on July 15, 2016, and was thwarted by 8 a.m. the next day.
Facing down the threat, the Turkish people courageously showed the world that they would not tolerate any attempt to thwart their will as expressed through their democratically elected government.
