National intelligence agency head submits resignation letter 64 days before Trump takes office

WASHINGTON (AA) – National Intelligence Agency James Clapper told Congress Thursday he has officially signaled he will resign.

"I submitted my letter of resignation last night, which felt pretty good," he said before a panel at the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.

The 75-year-old top spy, like all senior officials in the Barack Obama administration would have to step down before President-elect Donald Trump appoints his own officials.

Clapper’s becomes the first official to resign within there Obama administration since Trump was elected. "I have 64 days left and I'd have a pretty hard time with my wife going past that," Clapper told lawmakers.

He did not provide a reason for his resignation.
