LONDON (AA) - Fishing leaders in Scotland have warned that plans to massively expand offshore wind pose a serious threat to their industry and the marine environment.
The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) described the rollout as a “stampede” and a “gamble” as it urged an immediate stop to further offshore consents.
The Scottish Government wants to install up to 40 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind capacity by 2040. The SFF said this target is “far too high” and would cause “irreversible damage” while displacing fleets from traditional fishing grounds.
Its call is set out in official responses to two government consultations on offshore wind policy and planning.
Ministers argue offshore wind is vital to meeting Scotland’s net zero target by 2030 and creating new green jobs as part of the transition from oil and gas.
The UK Government has also backed expansion, confirming in March that the Port of Cromarty Firth will be a major hub for floating offshore wind and awarding more than £55 million ($74 million) for its growth.
