Football: Croatia ease past Nigeria to bag victory

Croatia win against Nigeria 2-0, top World Cup Group D

ANKARA (AA) - Croatia topped 2018 FIFA World Cup Group D after beating Nigeria 2-0 late Saturday.

Croatia took the lead in the 32nd minute when Nigeria scored an own goal at Kaliningrad Stadium.

Croatia striker Mario Mandzukic's header was deflected by Nigeria midfielder Oghenekaro Etebo into the Nigeria net.

Croatia led the first half 1-0.

In 70th minute Croatia were awarded a penalty after Mandzukic had been fouled by Nigeria defender William Ekong. Croatia star Luka Modric converted the penalty successfully, 2-0. Croatia doubled the gap.

Modric's goal sealed victory for Croatia so they won the match 2-0.

Earlier in the day, Iceland drew against Argentina 1-1 held in Moscow.

Following these matches, Croatia led the group with three points. The Balkan team was followed by Argentina and Iceland. They have one point each. Nigeria came last in the group.
