NEW DELHI (AA) – Economist and two-time Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh passed away on Thursday. He was 92.
Singh was admitted to the emergency department at All India Institute Of Medical Sciences in the capital New Delhi after a sudden “loss of consciousness,” the health facility said in a statement.
“Despite all efforts, he couldn’t be revived and was declared dead at 9.51 pm (1641GMT)."
Singh, a top leader of the main opposition Congress party, served as prime minister of the South Asian nation between 2004 and 2014, and before that as finance minister.
A renowned economist, he is considered the architect of liberalizing the Indian economy. He is survived by his wife and three daughters.
His successor and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his demise. “India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji,” Modi said. "Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist."
