Former Russian lawmaker arrested on bribery charges

Moscow's Basmanny Court remands Anatoly Voronovsky into custody until Jan. 11 and sends him to pretrial detention center

ISTANBUL (AA)—Anatoly Voronovsky, a former member of Russia's lower house, or State Duma, was arrested on charges of accepting large bribes, multiple Russian media outlets reported on Wednesday.

According to local media, Moscow's Basmanny Court has remanded the former deputy into custody until Jan. 11 and sent him to the pretrial detention center.

Voronovsky, a member of the ruling United Russia party in the State Duma, is accused of accepting bribes related to road construction contracts totaling 25 million rubles (approximately $323,000). Bribery charges carry a maximum of 15 years in prison.

Earlier, the State Duma deseated Voronovsky following his resignation. His parliamentary immunity was revoked, and a criminal case was opened against him.
