Formula 1 driver Alonso undergoes jaw surgery

39-year-old Spanish national taken to hospital after cycling accident in Switzerland

ANKARA (AA) – Alpine Formula 1 team's Spanish driver Fernando Alonso underwent a jaw operation on Friday after he had a cycling accident in Switzerland.

"Following his cycling accident yesterday Fernando Alonso was kept under observation in hospital in Switzerland. Medics discovered a fracture in his upper jaw and conducted a successful corrective operation," the Alpine F1 Team said on Twitter.

It added that Alonso, 39, will be under observation in the hospital for a further 48 hours.

Alonso will rest for a few days and then he may "progressively" resume his training ahead of the 2021 Formula 1 season.

On Thursday, Alpine F1 Team confirmed the accident and said that Alonso "is conscious and well and awaiting further medical examinations tomorrow [Friday] morning."

The 2021 Formula 1 World Championship will start with the Bahrain Grand Prix in late March.

The F1 star won back-to-back Formula 1 titles with French manufacturer Renault in 2005 and 2006.
