ISTANBUL (AA) - French President Emmanuel Macron on Friday welcomed US President Donald Trump’s call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine and urged Russia to make a similar commitment.

"I welcome his clear call for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire, as did our British and Nordic partners this morning," Macron said on X.

He added that he held several discussions with Trump overnight about the ongoing conflict.

"We must all work toward this without delay, without pretense and without stalling," he said.

He noted that Ukraine had agreed to such a ceasefire nearly two months ago and called on Russia to follow suit.

"I now expect Russia to do the same. If not, we will be ready to respond firmly, with all Europeans and in close coordination with the United States," he added.

Trump on Thursday called for a 30-day “unconditional” ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, saying it must “ultimately build toward a peace agreement.”

Germany’s new Chancellor Friedrich Merz also expressed support for the US proposal on Friday and said he had discussed the latest developments in Ukraine with Trump.
