French city of Lyon cracks down on car traffic to tackle air pollution

Initiative, part of broader effort to improve air quality, includes new traffic restrictions and urban changes that prioritize pedestrians and public transportation

ISTANBUL (AA) - In a bid to curb air pollution, the French city of Lyon has introduced a series of measures aimed at discouraging car traffic in its historic city center, known as the Presqu'ile.

The initiative, part of a broader effort to improve air quality in the city -- France’s third largest -- includes new traffic restrictions and urban changes that prioritize pedestrians and public transportation, France 24 reported on Tuesday.

According to a report by France 2, local residents have expressed mixed feelings about the transformation of the urban landscape. While some support the environmental objectives, others feel inconvenienced by reduced access to central streets and limited parking.

City officials say the measures are essential to reduce pollution and make the area more livable, especially as the region continues to face environmental challenges linked to vehicle emissions.

The plan is part of Lyon’s wider environmental policy, which includes the expansion of low-emission zones and the promotion of cycling infrastructure and clean public transport.
