ISTANBUL (AA) — French police arrested two men on charges of throwing explosive devices at the Russian consulate in Marseille, the prosecutor's office confirmed on Tuesday.

The explosives, made with plastic soda bottles, were thrown at the consulate’s facade early Monday morning, coinciding with the third anniversary of the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

Two of the three bottles exploded, causing detonations. No casualties were reported.

The suspects fled but were arrested during a pro-Ukraine protest on Monday evening. Police identified them using surveillance footage, according to French broadcaster BFMTV.

Emergency services, including bomb disposal units, were quickly dispatched to the scene. The consulate staff, including the Russian consul, were confined inside during the response.

The prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation for "destruction by explosive or incendiary substances," which is being handled by the Organized Crime and Specialized Division.

The City of Marseille stated on X that it "strongly condemns any act of violence and remains fully committed to ensuring public safety and peace."
