BERLIN (AA) - German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will propose a ban on carrying knives on trains and public transport vehicles.

Speaking to the Bild am Sonntag newspaper on Saturday, Faeser said that at a meeting to be attended by the state interior ministers, she would propose a general ban on carrying knives on intercity trains and urban public transport.

She said that the ban would prevent violence, adding that the ban can be controlled by the federal police at train stations and by the police in the states in public transport vehicles.

The minister said that those who violate the gun laws commit serious crimes and should be punished.

However, a police union statement argued said that such a general ban could not be controlled.
